Timber Frame Course – Tiny Home

Traditional Greenwood Timber Framing

Have you ever dreamed about building your own tiny house? Have you ever wondered how to build with big timbers and no nails? This course gives you both – an interesting tiny house design to build and traditional greenwood working skills to build it with.

Over a week’s tuition you will gain a broad understanding of calculating, crafting and building a timber frame structure. You will practice woodworking techniques with hand tools and power tools and, as part of a close-knit team, you will produce a beautiful 10m² traditional timber frame.

You will learn about the tools you need, how to use them safely, and how to look after them, including sharpening techniques. We will also learn about choosing the right timber, understanding individual logs and how milled timber moves during seasoning.

Beginners and Advanced Carpentry

Even though there is no experience necessary to do this course if you pick the techniques up quickly or already have competent carpentry skills, there is plenty of opportunity to work on more complex joints for the build.

On the last day – after days of hands on learning – we will erect the completed frame and see the results of all our hard work.

After a week of hands-on learning, we will erect the completed frame and see the results of our collective hard work: an exquisite, handcrafted 10m² tiny house frame that you can replicate at home or adapt to suit your own needs – a stunning, tiny space that will stand the test of time.

Spaces are limited to 8 people per course to ensure each person gets the attention needed to learn the craft. The course runs from 2pm Sunday through to 12pm Saturday.

Cost: $1,950 per person. Book early and save $200 of final payment!

We have partnered up with Tiny Lifestyle to be able to bring you more of these courses.

Community

Our intimate student groups of like-minded people very quickly create a feeling of whanaū. We walk with each other through the process, laugh together and support each other’s learning.

There are many opportunities for us to get to know each other, including a communal dinner on Sunday evening before the hands on part of the course starts on Monday morning. We also host a celebratory team meal on the Friday evening after erecting the completed timber frame, honouring the beautiful structure we’ve created that will stand for over 100 years.

Our communal house is on-site and provides space for students to rest away from the workshop and is a comfortable place for us all to enjoy communal meals.

Location

Our new Tiny Lifestyles workshop is based in a beautiful part of Golden Bay not far from Takaka. There’s a stunning swimming hole just 2 minutes walk away where students can cool down with a swim after an intense days learning. Paynes Ford climbing wall and river walk is a 10 minute walk away. Takaka township is a 5 minute drive or a 20 minute cycle away with access to shops, bars and a community cinema. A variety of beaches and other nature walks are within close access by bike or car.

Accommodation

There are 2 double bedrooms that can be booked in the communal house but we offer free camping and campervan sites to all participants. There is no electricity or water hook up but all campers have access to the shower and bathroom in the communal house.

A double bedroom in the communal house costs an additional $50 per night (available for the 6 night course). Spaces are limited so please reserve early if you would prefer a bedroom. Other public accommodation is available near the workshop if additional bedrooms are required.

Food

Included in the course cost are wholesome, nutritious, morning teas and lunches every day, plus the two communal evening meals (Sunday & Friday).

For an additional $100, you can opt for the course to be fully catered, which will give you access to a self-serve breakfast and a cooked wholesome 2 course evening meal.

Both options must be pre-booked and paid for prior to the workshop. All meals will be served in the communal house. We cater for most dietary requirements and while we do our best to avoid traces of allergens, we cannot guarantee that food is allergen free.
