Timber Frame Course – Octagon Pod

Traditional Greenwood Timber Framing

There is nothing quite like living in the round and this course gives you the skills and plans to build a 10 square meter octagonal structure with a self supporting roof – no central post – using large timber beams and hardwood pegs to hold it together.

On this 7 day course you will gain a well rounded understanding of milling, calculating and building a timber frame structure; you will practice woodworking techniques with hand tools and power tools; and, as part of a close knit team, you will produce a beautiful octagonal timber frame.

You will learn about the tools you need, how to use them safely, and how to look after them, including sharpening techniques. We will look at choosing the right timber, understanding individual logs and how milled timber moves during seasoning. Using our onsite wood mill we will demonstrate and explore milling practices.

We will investigate and practice the basic techniques of timber framing – laying out, calculating, marking and chiseling various mortise and tenon joints, and the use of hardwood pegs to hold the frame together.

Even though there is no experience necessary to do this course if you pick the techniques up quickly or already have good carpentry skills, there is plenty of opportunity to work on more complex joints for the build.

In this course, you will build a dynamic octagonal frame with a self-supporting roof which is prefect for creating an interesting garden feature or a 10 square meter ‘pod’ to stand alone or link together for a remarkable modular home. The options are endless.

The course runs from 9am – 5pm everyday and the price includes wholesome, homemade nutritious morning tea and lunch every day. This 7 day course costs $1,400.

We offer free camping and caravan sites on the school grounds (no electric or water hook up) with the use of our hot outdoor shower and compost toilet.

The wholesome, homemade nutritious morning tea and lunch is included in the price. A 2 course delicious dinner is available at an extra cost of $15 a day but this must be pre-booked and paid for at the time of final payment.
